Greek SYRIZA leader Rena Dourou meets Speaker Kaklamanis on 52nd anniversary of democracy restoration

Rena Dourou, newly appointed president of the SYRIZA parliamentary group, held her first official meeting with Nikitas Kaklamanis, the speaker of the Hellenic Parliament. During the discussion they marked 52 years since the restoration of democracy in Greece, recalling the 1974 military coup that led to Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus.

Dourou emphasized the need to defend parliamentary institutions, stating, “We will fight against the depreciation of politics and the erosion of democratic bodies.” Kaklamanis added that no solution can be just if a “occupying army remains on the island,” referring to the continued Turkish presence in Cyprus. Both leaders framed the meeting as a reaffirmation of Greece’s democratic commitments.
