Greek SYRIZA skips presidential ceremony marking Republic restoration
The parliamentary group of SYRIZA announced it will not attend the evening reception at the Presidential Mansion organized by President Konstantinos Tsatoulas for the annual "Restoration of the Republic" anniversary. In a letter signed by party president Rena Dourou, SYRIZA said the event is compromised by the participation of "nostalgic members of the former junta, representatives of the far‑right and revisionists of our modern history," arguing that their presence disrespects the memory of the dictatorship's victims.
The boycott joins similar refusals by the Freedom Movement and the NIKI party, which also cited the coincidence of the anniversary with remembrance days for victims of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. SYRIZA instead chose to attend separate commemorations honoring resistance fighters and victims of the former military regime.
