Greek government expands debt relief: non‑seizable limit raised to €1,600 and new 72‑installment plan for overdue taxes
On 5 June 2026 the Greek Minister of Finance announced an increase of the non‑seizable bank‑deposit limit from €1,250 to €1,600 per month. The protection applies to individuals with overdue debts to the state or banks, provided they register a bank account as non‑seizable through the AADE electronic portal.
From 27 July 2026 a digital platform of the General Secretariat for Financial Sector and Private Debt Management became operational under Law 5313/2026. The extrajudicial mechanism now accepts debts of €5,000 or more (down from €10,000), covering private obligations to public bodies and banks. Up to about one million eligible debtors can enrol, gaining suspension of seizures and the option to repay in up to 420 monthly installments for bank debts (or up to 240 for public debts).
In parallel, a separate scheme allows taxpayers with overdue liabilities dated up to 31 December 2023 to settle them in up to 72 monthly installments. The minimum monthly payment is €30, and applicants must have filed tax returns for the last five years, have no active restructuring of the same debt, and have no final conviction for tax evasion or smuggling. Applications are submitted electronically via the myAADE portal until 31 December 2026.
