Greek taxpayers face record July 2026 tax bill of €8.5 billion
By 31 July 2026, Greek taxpayers must settle a record‑high tax bill of €8.564 billion. The amount combines the first instalment of income tax, the fifth ENFIA payment, June VAT for businesses and professionals, and outstanding settlement instalments.
More than 2.4 million taxpayers owe an extra €4.983 billion for 2025 income‑tax arrears. Those who pay the full amount by the deadline receive a discount of 2 %–4 %, with the maximum rate applying to filings submitted by 15 May 2026. Taxpayers may also spread payments over eight monthly instalments, use interest‑free credit‑card plans for up to 12 months, or opt for up to 24 instalments under a regular settlement programme.
The average tax assessed for individuals who received a tax assessment notice is €2 075. Over 6 million property owners are paying the fifth of twelve ENFIA instalments. Projected public‑revenue collections for August–December 2026 range from €5.7 billion to €6.96 billion per month, with detailed forecasts of €6.324 billion in August, €6.412 billion in September, €6.679 billion in October, €5.738 billion in November and €6.961 billion in December. The total tax liability for the second half of 2026 will be €39.558 billion, up from €34 billion in the first half.
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) recorded 6 737 763 individual tax returns filed early, 31 672 more than in 2025, covering 8 954 982 natural persons and 385 515 legal entities.
