Greek taxi federation seeks legal framework for in-vehicle cameras

The Panhellenic Federation of Professional Taxi and Market Owners (POEIATA) is calling for a legislative framework to allow the legal installation and operation of interior cameras in all taxis. The federation argues that such measures are essential to protect drivers from physical attacks, robberies, threats, and vehicle damage, particularly during night shifts when they interact with unknown passengers.

In a formal letter addressed to the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministries of Citizen Protection and Justice, and the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, the federation emphasized that driver safety should be a matter of institutional care rather than individual responsibility. The proposal includes establishing technical specifications, defining activation terms, and setting strict rules for data retention, such as automatic deletion after a certain period unless an incident occurs.

Local taxi associations, including the Taxi Owners Association of Achaia, have echoed these calls, noting that drivers face risks ranging from refusal to pay to violent assaults. They are also seeking increased police presence at taxi stands to address issues like illegal parking and workplace safety.
