Greek teachers announce 24-hour strike for October 21

Greek teacher federations DOEE and OLME have announced a 24-hour strike scheduled for October 21, 2026. The protest, organized under the ADEDY umbrella, will include a central gathering at the Propylaea in Athens alongside local demonstrations across Greece.

The educators are demanding several systemic changes, including the immediate filling of approximately 15,000 teaching vacancies and a reduction in student numbers per classroom. Financial demands include increasing state education funding to 5% of GDP, raising salaries, and reinstating the 13th and 14th month pay cycles.

Additional grievances involve the abolition of the ‘Question Bank’ and the ‘Minimum Entry Base’ for higher education, improvements to school infrastructure, and opposition to recent disciplinary laws and evaluation policies. Protesters characterized the current state of schools as unsustainable due to inflation, stagnant wages, and bureaucratic expansion.
