Greece education sector faces nationwide strikes and student protests

A massive two-day mobilization involving students, teachers, and public sector workers is taking place across Greece on October 20 and 21, 2026. The protests target the rising cost of living, inadequate school infrastructure, and severe staffing shortages.

University students have established encampments in Athens’ Syntagma Square and Thessaloniki’s Agia Sophia pedestrian zone to protest high rents and the lack of affordable student housing. They are demanding increased state funding for higher education, more dormitory places, and subsidies for meals and transportation.

Educational unions have announced significant industrial actions. The Hellenic Teachers' Association (DOE) has called for a 24-hour strike on October 21. The Federation of Secondary Education Employees (OLME) has scheduled work stoppages, while teachers in various regions, including the Cyclades and Pieria, are participating in localized strikes. Key demands from educators include substantial salary increases, the restoration of 13th and 14th month salaries, and permanent recruitment to address critical vacancies.

The ADEEDY union has also called for a work stoppage from 11:00 until the end of shifts for all public sector employees. Major rallies are scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, including a central education rally at the Propylaea in Athens at noon and a demonstration at the Venizelos Monument in Thessaloniki at 11:30.
