Greek Tempi train crash families seek harsher charges

The Association of Relatives of the Tempi train crash victims filed a petition after the 12th and 13th sessions of the main trial in Thessaloniki concluded. They request that the homicide charge be upgraded from negligence to "homicide with intent," arguing that officials knew for years about safety risks on the railway.

The relatives also ask that the offence of dangerous interference with fixed‑track transport be reclassified as a aggravated criminal act against representatives of Hellenic Train, noting that the current indictment only carries lesser misdemeanor charges. They point out that the indictment does not assign responsibility for the deaths of 29 passengers who were burned after the explosion that followed the collision, part of the total 57 fatalities. The association says it will continue its legal fight to hold all responsible parties to account and to expose the systemic failures that led to the disaster.
