Greek Tourism Minister visits Ionian Islands to discuss regional development
Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and Ionian Islands Regional Governor Giannis Trepeklis met in Corfu to discuss a new tourism promotion strategy focused on sustainable development and the enhancement of the region's tourism products.
A primary focus of the discussions was the promotion of smaller and peripheral islands, specifically the Diapontia Islands, including Othonoi, Mathraki, and Eriousa, as well as Kastos and Kalamos. The goal is to market these locations as destinations for authentic experiences by leveraging their natural, cultural, and historical identities.
The meeting highlighted the role of the Destination Management & Marketing Organization (DMMO) of the Ionian Islands Region as a central tool for coordinating stakeholders and implementing long-term strategies. Additionally, officials discussed extending the tourist season, targeting emerging markets, and utilizing digital platforms like ‘VisitGreece’ and the international visibility of Christopher Nolan’s film ‘The Odyssey’ to promote the region.
Minister Kefalogianni also addressed the needs of island residents, emphasizing ‘insularity’ as a priority and announcing the creation of an Intergovernmental Committee for Insularity to tackle issues regarding port infrastructure, connectivity, and funding.
