Greek U16 water polo team opens World Championship in Zagreb with win over Mexico
The Greek under‑16 women's water polo team travelled to Zagreb on 24 July to take part in the World Championship scheduled for 25‑31 July 2026. The squad, coached by Argyris Theodoropoulos, includes five players from Panionios and a support staff that features physiotherapist Nausika Atsidaku and international referee Maria Daskalopoulou.
Greece opened its campaign on 25 July at 17:00 Greek time, facing Mexico. The Greeks dominated the match, winning 25‑3. Goalkeeper Ioanna Voutsika kept a clean sheet until halftime, while forward Sofia Lamprouli was named MVP after scoring five goals and providing two assists. Other notable contributors were Nikolaia Morochliadou, who added an assist, and Evgenia Plemmenou, who recorded three goals and two assists.
The team will next play Croatia on 26 July, Brazil on 27 July and the defending champion Spain on 28 July as part of Group A.
