Greek Parliament approves water‑management bill expanding EYDAP and EYATH
The Greek Parliament voted 157‑131 to pass a water‑management bill that expands the authority of the public water‑supply companies EYDAP and EYATH over water supply and wastewater services. Minister Stavros Papastavrou said the existing system has exhausted its limits and highlighted that Greece ranks 19th worldwide and second in the EU for water‑stress risk.
Opposition parties and several NGOs, including WWF Greece and Greenpeace, argue the legislation paves the way for water privatisation and commodification. Seventeen environmental organisations have called for the bill’s withdrawal, citing concerns that it breaches EU law by authorising the diversion of the Krikellopotas and Karpenesiotis rivers toward Attica. The bill also strengthens the Waste‑Management Authority (RAAE) and the Water‑Management Organisation of Thessaly (ODYTH).
