Greek water utilities EYDAP and EYATH to gain expanded authority

The Greek Parliament received a draft law from the Ministry of Environment and Energy that expands the geographic and operational scope of the Thessaloniki Water Supply Company (EYDAP) and the Thessaloniki Water and Sewerage Company (EYATH). The legislation also strengthens the role of the Water and Energy Regulatory Authority (RAAE) and updates the framework for the Thessaly Water Management Organization.

The reform aims to address chronic fragmentation in water service provision, outdated infrastructure, high loss rates, staffing shortages, and financing challenges. It proposes larger, financially stronger providers to consolidate networks, attract investment, digitise assets and accelerate drought‑mitigation projects. The bill is undergoing public consultation and calls for comprehensive economic‑technical justification before final adoption.
