Greek winds to ease on Sunday, giving relief to firefighting crews

The national weather service forecast that strong winds will subside on Sunday, providing a breather for firefighters battling large blazes in western Attica. Winds are expected from the north‑northeast at force 4‑6 Beaufort, reaching up to 7 Bft locally in the Aegean during the morning, while weaker breezes will affect western Attica.

Temperatures on the mainland are projected at 34‑36 °C, with local highs of 37 °C, while the Cyclades and northern Crete will see around 30 °C. The rest of the islands are forecast at 33‑34 °C. Other regions, including Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Thrace, the Ionian islands, the Peloponnese and central Greece, are expected to experience generally clear skies with temperatures ranging from 20‑36 °C.

These conditions are expected to aid firefighting efforts as the reduced wind intensity lessens the spread of the fires that have been raging across the region.
