Greek workers migrate to Iceland for seasonal tourism roles

Approximately 1,100 Greek nationals work in Iceland during the summer months, primarily in seasonal roles within the tourism sector, such as bars and restaurants. This number typically decreases to between 400 and 500 during the winter.

Many of these workers, such as those located in the fishing village of Höfn, migrate to Iceland seeking economic security, stability, and higher wages. While finding employment can be a difficult process requiring months of persistence, workers report positive experiences regarding labor rights, including respect, scheduled breaks, and provided meals. The demand for such personnel has increased significantly since 2022 as Iceland has evolved into a major tourist destination.
