Greek yogurt nutritional benefits and health properties

Greek yogurt has gained popularity due to its dense texture and nutritional profile, which is achieved by straining the whey from fermented milk. According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a 100-gram serving of whole milk Greek yogurt provides approximately 9 grams of protein, 111 milligrams of calcium, and 147 milligrams of potassium, along with vitamins A, B12, and D.

Nutritional experts, including Harvard-trained specialist Yael Hasbani, note that Greek yogurt provides high-quality biological proteins and essential amino acids. While cottage cheese may contain slightly more protein per 100 grams (11 grams compared to 9 grams), Greek yogurt is often easier to consume in larger quantities. Compared to cottage cheese, Greek yogurt typically contains less sodium and more probiotics.

Beyond protein, Greek yogurt can support gut health through live bacterial cultures that contribute to microbiota diversity. Its high protein content also promotes satiety, which may assist in appetite control. However, consumers are advised to check labels for “live/active cultures” and avoid products with high added sugar to maximize metabolic benefits.
