Green acquires ABB industrial site in Birr for data center campus

Swiss data center provider Green has acquired approximately 250,000 square meters of industrial land in Birr from ABB. The site, known as Grossacher and Grändel, was previously held by ABB as a strategic reserve but is no longer required for their operations.

Green plans to develop the area into a modern, energy-efficient data center campus to meet growing demand for local digital infrastructure. The project aims to integrate circular economy principles by capturing waste heat from the data centers to be used for industrial processes or fed into local heating networks.

Additionally, the data centers are designed to support the Swiss power grid by providing tertiary control energy to balance fluctuations in electricity supply and demand. The development will also include spaces for industry, commerce, and publicly accessible green zones, with specific uses to be coordinated with the municipality of Birr and the Canton of Aargau.
