Green Africa Youth Organization launches waste segregation initiative in Greater Accra
The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) has partnered with schools and metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies across Greater Accra to promote waste segregation. Operating under GAYO’s Zero Waste portfolio, the initiative spans seven municipalities, including Accra Metropolitan, Ablekuma West, Ledzokuku, and La Dade Kotopon.
The program aims to teach students to separate waste at the source, allowing organic waste to be converted into compost for school gardens and plastics to be processed into pellets at a material recovery facility. To support this, GAYO is distributing 200 bins, 300 books, pens, and educational materials to participating schools.
This initiative precedes a government directive requiring all households to begin separating waste next year. GAYO officials noted that approximately 60 percent of waste generated in schools is organic. The partnership also seeks to address previous issues where sorted waste was reportedly mixed back together during collection.
