Tom Tiffany survives emergency plane landing in Wisconsin lake

U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, a Republican candidate for governor of Wisconsin, and pilot Leonard Boltz survived an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau on Saturday night. The aircraft, a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, reportedly lost power while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport as the occupants were returning from a political dinner in La Crosse County.

After the plane landed in the water and began to submerge, Tiffany and Boltz exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area. They were rescued by a Wausau Fire Department airboat at approximately 9:05 p.m. Both men were transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Tiffany sustained a laceration above his right eye that required stitches but was released the same night.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will investigate the cause of the mechanical failure. Local authorities have placed a buoy near the submerged aircraft and advised boaters to avoid the area until the plane can be removed.
