Green Bee-eaters gather near Diyarbakır reservoir before migration
Rare Green Bee-eaters have been observed gathering near the Devegeçidi Dam Reservoir in Diyarbakır, Turkey, ahead of their autumn migration to the south. Nature photographer and documentary artist Veysi Arcagök captured images of the birds, noting their vibrant emerald green plumage and acrobatic flight patterns.
Arcagök observed that the birds are congregating primarily in the marshes and small ponds surrounding the reservoir rather than the main body of water. This behavior is part of their preparation to store energy for the long migratory journey. The increased water levels at the reservoir following heavy rainfall last year have contributed to higher bird biodiversity in the region.
The area serves as a critical sanctuary and feeding stop for migratory species, providing the necessary nutrients required before their long-distance travel. The presence of the Green Bee-eater, a species not frequently encountered in the Diyarbakır area, highlights the region's significant biodiversity potential.
