Green Fund approves 744,000 euros for Aitoliko Lagoon ecosystem

The Green Fund Board of Directors has unanimously approved 744,000 euros in funding for the project “Actions for the upgrading of the water ecosystem of the Aitoliko Lagoon.” The beneficiary of this funding is the Region of Western Greece.

Part of the “Natural Environment and Climate Resilience 2026” program, the initiative aims to combat environmental degradation, specifically addressing hypoxia, eutrophication, and malodor issues reported by the local community. The project will be implemented through two main actions.

Action A involves scientific monitoring and decision-making support, to be carried out via a programmatic agreement between the Region and the University of Patras. This includes systematic environmental monitoring, water and sediment sampling, and the creation of a hydrodynamic model to simulate climate change scenarios.

Action B focuses on the pilot application of technological solutions. This includes the procurement and installation of energy-autonomous solar-powered units for circulating large volumes of water, as well as an autonomous telemetric station for real-time continuous monitoring. The project is expected to improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, and support traditional fishing.
