Green hydrogen technology advances as European industrial projects accelerate

Researchers have developed a new technology to produce green hydrogen using a catalyst that reduces reliance on expensive platinum. This advancement aims to lower production costs by up to 40 times and could provide a viable energy alternative for heavy transport and data centers, which are projected to consume up to 9% of US electricity by 2030.

In Europe, the deployment of green hydrogen is accelerating through large-scale industrial electrolysis projects. Major initiatives are currently under construction across Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Portugal, and Spain, targeting hard-to-electrify sectors like refining, chemicals, and steel production.

Spain is positioning itself as a leader in this transition with significant projects such as the Moeve Onuba Energy Park in Huelva and Repsol’s Petronor Green Hydrogen Hub. While Sweden currently hosts the largest installation in Europe at 700 MW, Spanish projects are among the most advanced in terms of execution.
