Green Lantern franchise transitions from 2011 film to HBO series Lanterns
The Green Lantern franchise is undergoing a significant shift following the critical and commercial failure of the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds. The original film, which focused on Hal Jordan, earned $237 million against a $200 million budget and failed to launch the intended sequel, leading to the eventual establishment of the DC Extended Universe through other characters.
In contrast, the new HBO series, titled ‘Lanterns’, has become a major success, attracting over 19 million viewers per episode. The eight-episode mystery series features Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The narrative follows the two characters as they investigate mysterious deaths in rural Nebraska, utilizing a non-linear timeline that shifts between 2016 and 2026.
