Green Movement addresses renewable energy protests in Bulgaria

The Green Movement has issued a formal position regarding a national protest scheduled for September 12, 2026, against the construction of wind turbines and photovoltaic parks on agricultural lands.

While the organization maintains that renewable energy sources are essential for reducing dependence on fossil fuels, achieving energy independence for Bulgaria, and meeting climate goals, they stated they do not support renewable energy development at any cost. The group noted that some projects have led to environmental destruction due to the bypassing of ecological legislation, corruption, and a failure to respect the interests of local communities.

The Green Movement is calling for stricter spatial and environmental rules, advocating for the priority use of rooftops, parking lots, industrial sites, and urbanized or degraded terrains for energy projects. They also support decentralized energy production, citizen energy, and energy communities to ensure households and small businesses share in the economic benefits of the transition.
