Green parties face electoral declines and strategic shifts

Green parties in different regions are facing electoral challenges and internal strategic shifts following recent losses.

In the United Kingdom, the Green Party has seen support drop to nine percent in an Opinium survey, its lowest level since Zack Polanski became leader. This decline follows a lost by-election in Holborn and St Pancras and controversy surrounding a party conference motion regarding Zionism. Support among voters aged 18-34 has notably decreased from 28% to 14% over five months.

In the New Zealand/Australian context, the Greens are navigating a shift in strategy after losing three of four lower house seats in the 2025 federal election. Following the departure of Larissa Waters, the party has moved toward a more confrontational stance against the Labor Party under new leader David Shoebridge. This shift reflects an attempt to establish political distinctiveness after previous attempts at cooperation and policy-based bargaining failed to secure significant electoral gains.
