Green Party faces internal division over Zionism motion

The Green Party is experiencing significant internal friction following a conference vote in Brighton that passed a motion describing Zionism as racism. The motion, which passed by approximately 1,000 to 800 votes, defines Zionism as an ideology supporting an ethno-nationalist Jewish state to the exclusion or domination of the non-Jewish population.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has stated he will not seek to amend the policy until at least 2028. This stance has drawn criticism from various figures, including senior party official Hamza Egal, who has demanded an official apology to members. Additionally, the Chair of the Jewish Greens has called for Polanski’s resignation.

Local Green party branches are responding differently to the national policy. In Greenwich, Labour has pressured local Green councillors to disavow the motion, while the local Greens issued a statement saying they do not tolerate antisemitism but respect the conference's decision. In East Hertfordshire, Green leader Ben Crystall distanced himself from the motion, describing it as a failure that does not help address Middle East conflicts.
