Green Party faces internal divisions in Mexico and Colombia

In Mexico, Manuel Velasco, coordinator of the Green Party senators, acknowledged internal disagreements regarding a proposed reform by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The initiative seeks to require that individuals aspiring to the Presidency, a governorship, or the Head of Government of Mexico City hold only Mexican nationality. Velasco noted that some legislators within his caucus have concerns or hold dual nationality. Within the party, there is discussion regarding a compromise where the restriction would apply to the Presidency but exclude governorships. This has sparked speculation in Tamaulipas regarding Senator Maki Ortiz and her political future, specifically concerning her residency ties to the United States.

In Colombia, the Green Party has faced internal criticism following its decision to remain independent of the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella. Martha Alfonso, a former representative for Tolima, publicly condemned the party's neutrality on social media, describing the decision as “shameful.” Alfonso argued that the party should confront the current political model directly rather than adopting a neutral stance, which she believes could sideline core party issues such as gender equality, peacebuilding, and the climate emergency.
