Green Party in Germany pushes for stricter climate goals and funding
The Green Party (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN) in various German regions is pushing for stricter climate policies and increased funding for adaptation.
In Mainz, the local Green Party chapter has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2035. The group is opposing the construction of a new gas-powered engine plant on the Ingelheimer Aue, arguing that new fossil fuel infrastructure is incompatible with their 2035 goals. They are calling for the permanent termination of the “Zukunftskraftwerk” (KW 4) project and a reduction in existing fossil fuel plant capacities to avoid economic dependencies and high costs.
In Saarland, the Green Party is criticizing the state government's climate adaptation funding. Following a report from the German Weather Service, party leader Anne Lahoda described the allocated 5 million euros for a two-year climate adaptation program as insufficient. She noted that while 100 million euros are planned for road construction during the same period, climate measures such as urban greenery, heat protection, and flood prevention require significantly more investment to prevent future costs from escalating.
