Zack Polanski to seek Holborn and St Pancras seat in by-election

Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, has announced his intention to stand as a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary by-election for Holborn and St Pancras. The vacancy was created by the resignation of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who stepped down as the local MP to focus on international affairs.

Polanski, a member of the London Assembly, expressed excitement about the prospect of representing the community, describing the contest as a “referendum on ending rip-off Britain.” He criticized the Labour Party for standing up for “corporations and big money,” positioning himself as a defender of local people and communities.

The constituency has traditionally been a Labour stronghold, but the Greens have seen increased support in the area. In the 2024 general election, a Green candidate secured over 10% of the vote, while an independent candidate focused on opposition to the war in Gaza received nearly 19%.

The Green Party is fast-tracking its selection process, with local members expected to choose the official candidate by the end of next week. While Polanski is considered a leading contender, the party faces potential challenges from local activists and the possibility of a split vote if independent candidates also run.
