Green Party of Canada leadership race set for mid‑November 2026

The federal Green Party of Canada has confirmed two approved candidates for its leadership contest following Elizabeth May’s decision to step down. Former Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice, who served one term in the House of Commons, was deputy leader and critic for housing and disability inclusion before losing his seat in 2025. Ottawa high‑school teacher Nira Dookeran, a longtime party organizer and former candidate at federal and provincial levels, is the other contender.

Candidates must recruit at least 200 new members and raise $15,000 by Sept. 30 to appear on the final ballot. Party members will vote by ranked ballot between Nov. 2 and Nov. 13, and the new leader is slated to be announced in mid‑November (Nov 14‑15, 2026). The race will determine the party’s direction ahead of the next federal election.
