Green Party protests K+S salt wastewater discharge in Werra and Weser
A coalition of Green Party members from Hessen, Niedersachsen, Thüringen, and Nordrhein-Westfalen is protesting against the planned continuation of salt wastewater discharge into the Werra and Weser rivers beyond 2027.
During a protest in Witzenhausen, the group called on the fertilizer manufacturer K+S to cease discharging wastewater from potash mining. While K+S had previously pledged to stop discharging production wastewater by 2028 in favor of less concentrated tailings water, company plans reported by the Regierungspräsidium Kassel suggest a discharge runtime extending from 2028 to 2039.
Green Party representatives emphasized that the potash industry is a vital employer in North Hesse, making a long-term, stable environmental perspective essential. Environmental officials noted that salt pollution does not respect state borders and called for a commitment to the gradual reduction of salt levels in the affected waterways.
