Green sea turtle hatchlings emerge on Mersin beach, reach Mediterranean
The first hatchlings of the endangered green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) of the season have emerged from nests on the coast of Mersin, Turkey, and made their way into the Mediterranean Sea. The nests were located at the Davultepe 100th Year beach in the Mezitli district, and the emergence was recorded by the Mersin University Sea Turtle Application and Research Center.
Researchers, led by Dr. Mahmut Ergene, noted that this period is the most critical and exciting for the turtles. They emphasized that some nests were flooded by recent storms and sea water, and urged beach‑goers not to use lights at night or hand‑carry the hatchlings. The team highlighted ongoing threats to the species, including litter, vehicle tracks, uncontrolled human activity and climate change, and stressed the ecological importance of each turtle reaching the sea for the Mediterranean’s biodiversity.
