Green Shutters in Italy Originated from Copper Pigment
Green shutters are regarded as a hallmark of Italian architecture. The colour stems from verdigris, a copper‑based pigment made by reacting copper with vinegar. Until the early twentieth century verdigris was one of the few outdoor pigments that retained its colour, was cheaper than many alternatives, and provided a natural fungicidal and insect‑repellent layer. In humid coastal areas such as Liguria and the Amalfi Coast, wooden shutters were prone to woodworm; the green coating helped protect them. While many historic towns continue to require or favour green shutters for tradition and visual cohesion, not all shutters are green—some regions also use a deep red‑brown known as “Rosso Pompeiano.” Modern paints with UV and rot‑protective additives have largely replaced verdigris, yet owners and heritage bodies often retain the green hue for its cultural significance.
