AI recruitment tools spark candidate backlash and hiring overload

A Greenhouse report shows that about 63 % of job seekers in the United States have taken part in an AI‑driven interview, a share that rose 13 % in the last six months. The study found that roughly four out of ten candidates quit the process immediately after an AI interview, citing feelings of being treated like a data record rather than a person.

Recruiters are turning to AI‑powered screening and sourcing platforms such as HireVue, Manatal and Fetcher to cope with a surge in applications. Companies now receive an average of 254 applications per vacancy – a 412 % increase in workload – and many rely on AI to filter the flood. Fetcher’s pricing starts at $379 per month, HireVue’s enterprise solutions run from $25 k to $100 k per year, while Manatal is offered at $15 per user per month.

The market is also seeing a wave of AI‑generated résumés sold for roughly $20 each, creating what industry observers call an “AI doom loop”: candidates mass‑produce applications, employers are overwhelmed by near‑identical CVs, and both sides grow dissatisfied with the hiring experience.
