Greenland becomes focal point of US‑EU geopolitical rivalry

President Donald Trump has renewed efforts to increase United States influence over Greenland, shifting from threats of force to a push for economic control. The administration seeks the ability to block Chinese and Russian investments, negotiate new U.S. bases in the south, and obtain veto power over future foreign projects on the island.

In response, the European Union has stepped up diplomatic engagement. EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Josef Síkela visited Nuuk for a business forum, and Brussels announced a €520 million funding package for Greenland, representing 45 % of its overseas aid budget. The EU views the Arctic territory as a strategic asset for raw materials, energy and its geopolitical position, and has warned that American attempts to dominate Greenland would challenge European security interests.

Both the U.S. and EU are courting the self‑governing territory, which remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, highlighting growing competition in the Arctic region.
