Greenland Bishop Munk Gets International Church Support Amid US Threats

International Lutheran and Catholic leaders have issued statements of solidarity with the Church of Denmark in Greenland after the United States hinted at a claim on the territory. Bishops from the United States, Canada and Denmark, including Birger Nygaard of the Church of Denmark’s Interchurch Council, Henrik Stubkjær of the Lutheran World Federation, and Yehiel Curry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, emphasized human‑rights, dignity and respect for international law.

At the annual bishops’ meeting in January, Greenland’s bishop Paneeraq Siegstad Munk reaffirmed the desire for Greenland to remain part of the Danish realm and highlighted challenges such as limited internet coverage and the need for coordinated crisis‑response rituals. The meeting also discussed broader church matters, but the focus on Greenland underscored the intersection of religious solidarity and geopolitical tension.
