Greenland emerges as strategic energy and resource partner for EU

Greenland is emerging as a strategic partner for the European Union regarding energy, industrial, and digital ambitions. While direct electricity exports to Europe are currently considered unrealistic, Greenland’s renewable resources could support local industries, sustainable data infrastructure, and the processing of critical raw materials.

The island holds significant geopolitical value due to its vast renewable energy potential, untapped hydrocarbons, and strategic location near maritime chokepoints like the GIUK Gap. This has led to renewed interest from global powers, including the United States.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and has maintained a partnership with the EU since the 1985 Greenland Treaty. Current cooperation efforts focus on diversifying supply chains and enhancing energy security while prioritizing local value creation and sustainable land-use planning over power exports.
