The Inuit of Greenland – the Kalaallit, Tunumi and Inughuit, who together make up nearly 90% of the island’s 57,000 residents – have been campaigning for self‑determination for decades. Their call for greater autonomy has resurfaced as United States President Donald Trump discussed the possible acquisition of Greenland with Danish and European leaders, drawing renewed attention to the island’s political status.

At the same time, Trump’s Greenland proposal has sparked considerable activity in prediction markets. On platforms such as Kalshi, traders have wagered over $2.7 million on a market that asks whether the United States will acquire any part of Greenland before 2029, contributing to a total $7.7 million betting volume on related geopolitical questions. This speculative trading reflects heightened interest in the prospect of US control of the strategically important Arctic territory.
