Greenland ice melt releases trapped mercury and impacts sea level projections

Scientific research highlights the complex environmental consequences of melting glaciers, specifically regarding chemical release and sea level potential. In Greenland, melting ice is releasing mercury that has been trapped for centuries. This mercury, originating from both natural mineral erosion and human activities like coal burning, travels through meltwater rivers into Arctic fjords, potentially impacting marine ecosystems.

Separately, new modeling using the IceBoost v2.0 artificial intelligence tool has estimated the volume of the world's glaciers outside of Greenland and Antarctica. The study suggests that if these glaciers were to melt entirely, they could raise global sea levels by approximately 32.3 centimeters. The AI model, trained on millions of measurements, provides higher precision in calculating ice thickness and volume, identifying significant ice reserves such as the Geikie Plateau in eastern Greenland.
