Greenland ice sheets experience major calving events
Significant ice mass loss has been observed in Greenland, highlighted by two major calving events captured via satellite imagery.
A massive iceberg covering 17 square kilometers, roughly five times the size of Central Park, traveled over 1,000 kilometers from its suspected origin in northeast Greenland toward the North Atlantic. Detected by NASA’s Landsat 9, the iceberg has begun to fragment as it encounters warmer waters. Experts suggest it may have originated from Jøkelbugten or the Zachariæ Isstrøm glacier.
Separately, on August 4, a large section of the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland detached from the ice sheet. This fragment covers approximately 76 square kilometers, an area comparable to Manhattan, with some sections reaching 150 meters in thickness. The rapid deterioration and subsequent separation were monitored by the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar, as part of the ARCTEX project involving international researchers from Canada and the United Kingdom.
