Greenland Institute suspends new US collaborations amid Trump‑related tensions

The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources announced it will halt any new research collaborations with United States partners, limiting work to projects already underway. Institute director Josephine Nymand said, "I can confirm that we made the decision to only engage in projects with US partners that we already are or have been working with." The move aims to protect the institute’s scientific data and its researchers.

The decision comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed claims that Greenland, the semi‑autonomous Arctic territory of Denmark, should be under U.S. control. Nymand cited the Trump administration’s large‑scale deletion of climate and environmental data from government websites and its refusal to admit certain foreign scientists into the United States, stating, "I can't do much to help our compatriots if they are detained".

By suspending new ties, the institute seeks to safeguard its Arctic ecosystem research and the integrity of its biological‑resource monitoring amid heightened geopolitical friction.
