Greenland National Gallery project manager resigns

Nivi Christensen, the former project manager for the Greenland National Gallery of Art, has resigned after four months in the role. Christensen, who previously headed the Nuuk Art Museum, criticized the current plans for the institution, describing them as “poorly thought through.”

She argued that the foundation approved a building design by the Bjarke Ingels Group without sufficient reflection on the museum’s purpose or its intended collection. Christensen emphasized that as the first national gallery in the world dedicated to Indigenous art, the institution must avoid simply adopting traditional European models used by former colonial powers.

The proposed museum aims to house a range of items, including older Greenlandic artifacts, contemporary Greenlandic art, and international works. The collection is expected to include pieces from the Greenland National Museum, covering historical periods such as the Saqqaq culture.
