Greenland Premier Calls for US Agreement in Denmark‑US Working Group

Greenland’s premier, Jens‑Frederik Nielsen, said any resolution of the island’s status must be reached through the Denmark‑United States‑Greenland working group created earlier this year. He noted that President Trump has repeatedly asserted Washington’s right to control the Danish autonomous territory for national‑security reasons, but that the U.S. withdrew overt threats of occupation last summer, prompting the formation of the working group.

U.S. envoy Jeff Landry attended the Greenland Economic Forum on his first visit since his appointment, though he was not formally invited. He participated in the opening session and then left without meeting other delegates. In subsequent talks with Nielsen and Greenland’s foreign minister, officials reiterated that “the island and its people are not for sale,” while expressing openness to cooperation with Washington and affirming that American investment will not be abandoned.

France also voiced support, with trade minister Nicolas Forissier attending the forum and describing France’s presence as a show of solidarity with Greenland.
