Greenland Prime Minister says Trump abandoned annexation plan, US pressure persists

At the Aix‑en‑Provence Economic Forum in southern France, Greenland’s prime minister Jens‑Frederik Nielsen told delegates that the United States had informed him former President Donald Trump had dropped his idea of annexing Greenland.

Nielsen said the island continues to face “unacceptable pressure” from the US and that Greenland will remain aligned with the European Union, Denmark and NATO, while also seeking closer ties with Canada. He emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and will not compromise its right to self‑determination.

French foreign minister Jean‑Noël Barrot echoed the sentiment, noting that Greenland chose Europe and NATO over US “imperial pressure.”
