Greenland sovereignty tensions spark European diplomatic concern
Reports indicate that Donald Trump’s rhetoric regarding American control over Greenland has caused significant diplomatic tension among European leaders. According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s suggestions of US control and threats of military force led to high-level crisis meetings among Western heads of state in January 2026.
During a confidential meeting with approximately 30 Western leaders, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was reportedly visibly shaken by the discussions. The geopolitical uncertainty surrounding Greenland is also cited as a factor influencing NATO policy. Specifically, the situation contributed to discussions led by Secretary General Mark Rutte regarding increasing member defense spending targets from two percent to five percent of GDP, with the US reportedly pushing for the higher threshold.
