A New Yorker report disclosed that a secret U.S. committee formed during Donald Trump’s first term worked to persuade Greenland to break away from Denmark and arranged for U.S. military helicopters to practice landings there, a plan unknown to Danish and Greenlandic authorities. The proposed operations were linked to Vice President J.D. Vance’s March 2025 visit.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced the creation of a Norwegian consulate in Nuuk, aiming to strengthen cooperation with Greenlandic authorities on maritime matters and to underline Greenland’s status within the Kingdom of Denmark as part of Norway’s broader Arctic strategy.

Both moves highlight renewed strategic interest in the Arctic archipelago by the United States and Norway.
