Greenland's Independence Push Faces Economic Hurdles and US Rhetoric

Economist Javier Arnault warns that Greenland's bid for independence from Denmark is constrained by economics. Danish subsidies cover about half of Greenland's budget, and the territory lacks sufficient mining revenue—only three licensed mines exist, two of which operate, and a lawsuit with Australian firm ETM over a claimed $11.5 billion loss highlights the sector's challenges. Tourism also suffers from inadequate infrastructure.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier comments about annexing the Danish Arctic territory sparked European concern. U.S. ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder later called those statements a misunderstanding, emphasizing that no invasion was planned while the United States seeks a stronger military presence on the island.
