Greenlink Interconnector rerouted to avoid Dobby the elf memorial
The £430 million Greenlink Interconnector, a major energy project designed to link the electricity grids of the United Kingdom and Ireland, has been rerouted to avoid a fictional memorial site. The project, which includes 190km of subsea and underground cabling, was originally planned to pass through Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
This specific location serves as an unofficial pilgrimage site for Harry Potter fans, as it was used as a filming location for the death of the character Dobby the house-elf in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’. Following an interview by project representative Simon Ludlam, the company received hundreds of calls from fans concerned about the potential desecration of the site.
In response to the public outcry, developers worked with urban planners to find an alternative route. While the new path avoids the Dobby memorial, it reportedly passes near genuine Bronze Age archaeological remains. The interconnector, which has a capacity of 500MW, is intended to power approximately 380,000 homes.
