Greenlink power cable rerouted following Harry Potter fan protests
A major undersea power cable project, the Greenlink interconnector, has been rerouted following intense pressure from Harry Potter fans. The project, valued at approximately $500 million to $580 million, was designed to span 125 miles between County Wexford, Ireland, and Freshwater West in Wales to increase electrical capacity and share renewable energy.
Fans campaigned to protect the site at Freshwater West, which serves as a makeshift memorial for the fictional character Dobby the House-Elf. Simon Ludlam, CEO of Etchea Energy, reported receiving hundreds of calls from enthusiasts regarding the cable's planned route through the memorial site.
The decision to reroute the cable means the infrastructure will now pass through an area containing Bronze Age human remains, including urns associated with ancient burials.
