Woodside pauses Scarborough gas project after Greenpeace protest

Operations at Woodside Energy’s $12.5 billion Scarborough natural gas project have been paused following a protest by Greenpeace activists. The disruption occurred at a floating production unit located approximately 375 km off the coast of Western Australia.

On Saturday, four activists scaled the 70,000-ton structure and unfurled a banner reading “Stop Woodside’s Dirty Gas. Save Scott Reef.” The protesters expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of the proposed Browse project on the Scott Reef ecosystem, a remote coral system and foraging area for the endangered pygmy blue whale. Woodside stated that no physical contact with the reef is expected at water depths greater than 75 meters.

Following the unauthorized access, special police forces used a helicopter to remove activists from the platform. Two protesters were taken into police custody. Woodside described the incident as “dangerous, reckless and illegal” and a costly, avoidable disruption. The Scarborough project is currently 98% complete, with the first liquefied natural gas cargo shipment targeted for the fourth quarter.
