Greenpeace activists protest Kairos tanker over Black Sea oil leak

Greenpeace activists conducted a protest against the tanker Kairos in the waters near Burgas to demand the protection of the Black Sea and an end to fossil fuel projects. The action involved painting the message ‘No gas and oil’ on the vessel in white paint.

The protest follows reports from local organizations, such as the Nesebar Local Council, regarding oil pollution from the tanker. While Bulgarian authorities initially stated there was no leak, Greenpeace reported that satellite imagery and an inspection by the Arctic Sunrise icebreaker revealed a continuous leak from a hole in the rear of the ship.

In recent official correspondence, Bulgarian authorities acknowledged a leak but characterized it as ‘insignificant.’ Activists maintain that the risk to the Black Sea ecosystem and human health remains a serious concern.
